In short

CVE-2026-92189 is a critical external control of file path flaw in the writeTopologySectionToFile method of Quest Foglight for Databases. ZDI says the method uses a user-supplied path without proper validation, which lets an unauthenticated remote attacker run code as SYSTEM. Version 8.2.0 is listed as affected, and ZDI says Foglight 8.3 fixes it.

What it allows

The ZDI advisory ZDI-26-861 says the flaw exists within the writeTopologySectionToFile method. It "results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied path prior to using it in file operations." ZDI rates the flaw CVSS 3.0 9.8 Critical, and the record says no authentication is needed.

From a Chosen Path to Running Code

The record does not walk through the attack, so this part is our explanation of the class. When software lets a caller pick where a file goes, the caller can aim a write at a place the system later loads or runs. A file written there can then execute with the rights of the service.

ZDI puts those rights at SYSTEM, so a successful write could lead to full control of the host. The name of the method suggests it writes a section of topology data to a file, but that is only our reading of the name.

What to Look for on a Host

A path flaw leaves files behind, which is its one useful trait for defenders. We recommend listing files created or changed under the Foglight installation and in startup or scheduled locations since the product was last upgraded. Treat an unfamiliar executable or script written by the Foglight service as a sign of compromise.

The record does not say which directories the method can reach. Our least privilege entry explains why a service account that cannot write to program folders limits this kind of bug.

Who is affected

The CVE record lists a single affected version for this flaw, 8.2.0, and gives all other versions the status unknown. The ZDI page names the product but no version.

The ZDI-26-861 page says "Fixed in Foglight 8.3." That is the only fix information in the primary sources we read, so we do not name a hotfix or a build number. The siblings CVE-2026-92188 and CVE-2026-92190 carry the same fix line.

If your servers run an older build, plan the move to 8.3 as one change that closes all three. Our patch management entry describes how to schedule it.

Timeline

ZDI reports the vulnerability to the vendor, according to its disclosure timeline.

  2. 15 Sep 2026

    The CVE identifier is reserved.

  3. 3 Nov 2026

ZDI publishes advisory ZDI-26-861 and the CVE record goes live.

  4. 4 Nov 2026

NVD lists the entry with ZDI's CVSS 3.0 score and no NVD analysis yet.

What to do

  1. Move to Foglight 8.3

ZDI says Foglight 8.3 fixes the flaw. Upgrade the servers running 8.2.0 first, then any older build you cannot rule out.

  2. Check Recent File Changes

Compare files in the Foglight install folders and in startup and scheduled-task locations against a known-good copy. An unfamiliar script or executable is a reason to isolate the host.

  3. Cut Write Rights

We recommend running the Foglight service with the least rights that work, and denying it write access to folders that hold programs or scripts, where the vendor allows it.

  4. Restrict Who Can Connect

No login is needed per ZDI, so we recommend limiting network access to the server to administration hosts until it is upgraded.

Questions

What does external control of a file path mean?

It means a value supplied from outside decides where the software reads or writes a file, and the software does not check it. The class is CWE-73.

How does a bad path lead to code execution?

ZDI states the result but not the steps. In general, a file written to a place the system later runs can execute with the rights of the service, here SYSTEM.

Is a login required for CVE-2026-92189?

No. ZDI says authentication is not required to exploit it.

Is CVE-2026-92189 in the CISA KEV catalog?

No, not as of catalog version 2026.11.03.
