Phishing Monitoring & Domain Abuse
In Short

Brand protection is the work of stopping others from abusing your name, logos, products and trademarks. It covers fake websites, lookalike domains, counterfeit goods, fake social accounts and fraudulent ads. The goal is to keep customers from being cheated and to protect the trust your brand has earned.

What does brand protection cover?

Brand protection has a legal side and a technical side. The legal side is trademarks, copyright and design rights. The technical side is finding abuse online and getting it removed. Typical targets are:

  • Lookalike domains and typosquatting that copy your name.
  • Fake websites and shops that sell counterfeit goods.
  • Fake social accounts and mobile apps that pose as your company.
  • Fraudulent ads that use your name to send people to scams.

How does it work?

A team or tool watches domains, social networks, app stores, marketplaces and ads for your brand names. Each hit is checked by an analyst. Real abuse is then reported to the host, the registrar or the platform, with proof that you own the rights. To set this up as a routine, see Brand Protection 101.

When a domain copies a trademark, the owner can also file a dispute. In 2024, trademark owners from 133 countries filed 6,168 domain name cases with WIPO under the UDRP and country-code policies. The United States, France and the United Kingdom were the top filing locations.

Why does it matter in the EU, APAC and the US?

A fake site hurts customers wherever they live. A shopper in Berlin, a bank customer in Singapore and a patient in Ohio meet the same tricks: a copied login page, an ad that looks real, an app that is not yours. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center recorded $16.6 billion in reported losses in 2024.

Trademark rights are national, so proof that works in one country may not work in another. Teams that sell in several regions need evidence and templates for each market.

How do you know it is working?

Track a few simple numbers over time.

  • Time from detection to removal of a fake site.
  • Number of fake sites, profiles and ads that are live right now.
  • Share of alerts that turn out to be real abuse.
  • Customer reports of scams that use your name.

What mistakes are common?

Many teams treat brand protection as a legal task only and wait for customers to report fakes. By then the damage has started. Others watch domains but ignore social media and app stores. Weak evidence is the last common gap: a report without screenshots and proof of ownership is often ignored.

Questions.

  • What is an example of brand protection?

A bank finds a fake copy of its login page on a lookalike domain. The team reports it to the registrar and host, and the page is taken offline.

  • Is brand protection the same as trademark law?

No. Trademark law gives you the rights. Brand protection is the ongoing work of finding abuse and enforcing those rights online.

  • How is brand protection different from brand management?

Brand management shapes how people see your brand. Brand protection stops others from misusing it.

  • Does brand protection include social media?

Yes. Fake profiles, impersonation accounts and scam ads on social platforms are a common part of the work.
